The Seattle Seahawks are making a quarterback change heading into Week 9, and Drew Lock will get another opportunity to prove he can lead the offense. With Sam Darnold ruled out because of a quad injury, Lock is expected to start Sunday’s matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald announced Wednesday that Darnold will miss the game and be evaluated week to week. The injury creates an opportunity for Lock to step into the starting role once again.
Lock Has Already Proven What He Can Do
Lock has given Seahawks fans plenty of reasons to be excited about his opportunity. Earlier this season, he started against Arizona while Darnold was dealing with an injury and delivered an impressive performance.
In that 31-7 victory, Lock completed 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception. He connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for all three touchdown passes, helping Seattle dominate the Cardinals.
Through his appearances this season, Lock has completed 35 of 48 passes for 422 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions. Those numbers show how effective he has been when given opportunities.
An Important Opportunity for Seattle
The Seahawks enter the matchup with a 4-4 record and desperately need a victory to stay competitive in the NFC playoff race.
Lock will face an Arizona defense he has already enjoyed success against. However, Seattle cannot overlook the challenge, especially with the Cardinals also making a quarterback change.
There is one concern heading into Sunday. Lock has been dealing with an elbow injury that previously sidelined him for two games. Macdonald said the team will manage his workload throughout the week, while Jalen Milroe prepares as the backup.
Can Lock Lead Seattle to Another Win?
This is a major opportunity for Lock to show that he deserves more playing time. His previous performance against Arizona gives Seattle confidence, but repeating that success will be the challenge.
If Lock can protect the football and get his playmakers involved, the Seahawks have a strong chance to get back into the win column.
