LeBron James is already making an impact with the Philadelphia 76ers, even if his first few games have not been perfect. The 41 year old superstar joined Philadelphia during the offseason hoping to help the franchise compete for an NBA championship, and his early performances have shown that he can still contribute in multiple ways.
Through three regular season appearances, James is averaging 16.3 points, seven rebounds and 5.7 assists per game. Philadelphia won his first two games before suffering a 106-93 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Sunday.
Although the season is still young, James has given the 76ers reasons to be encouraged about what he can bring to their revamped roster.
LeBron Is Doing More Than Scoring
James has not needed to dominate the ball to make an impact. His passing, rebounding and basketball IQ have helped Philadelphia organize its offense while building chemistry with his new teammates.
In his Philadelphia debut against the New York Knicks, James recorded 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in a 106-100 victory. He followed that performance with 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists against the Cleveland Cavaliers as the 76ers rallied from a 29 point deficit to win 114-106.
Those performances demonstrated how James can influence a game without having to carry the scoring load every night.
With Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown providing additional offensive firepower, Philadelphia has several players capable of creating their own shots. James can focus on making the right reads, finding open teammates and taking advantage of defensive mismatches.
An Unexpected Challenge at Center
James also found himself in an unusual position against Detroit. With Joel Embiid and several other frontcourt players unavailable, Philadelphia started James at center.
He finished with 18 points and five assists, but the 76ers struggled defensively and lost their first game of the season.
James has made it clear that playing center is not something he expects to do regularly. With Embiid serving as Philadelphia’s primary big man, the team needs its frontcourt depth to get healthier.
The experience nevertheless showed James’ willingness to take on different responsibilities when his team needs him.
Can LeBron Help Philadelphia Win a Championship?
Philadelphia has assembled a talented roster, and James’ championship experience could become one of its biggest advantages. His leadership and ability to control the pace of a game should help the 76ers as they work to develop chemistry.
There are still concerns about his shooting efficiency, workload and the team’s rebounding. James also missed the victory over Milwaukee while managing a back issue, making workload management important early in the season.
Still, his first few appearances have offered encouraging signs. James does not need to be the best scorer every night to make Philadelphia better.
If he stays healthy and develops chemistry with Embiid, Maxey and Brown, James could be a major piece of the 76ers’ championship pursuit.
