Former Wolfpack Quarterback Emerges as Intriguing Candidate
North Carolina State football could be preparing for an unexpected reunion with one of the greatest quarterbacks in program history. Former NFL star Philip Rivers has emerged as a potential candidate to become the Wolfpack’s next head coach following the dismissal of Dave Doeren on Saturday.
Rivers is reportedly expected to be part of the conversation as NC State begins its search for a new leader. The 44 year old has spent the past several seasons coaching high school football in Alabama, but his experience as a longtime NFL quarterback and his connection to the Wolfpack make him an intriguing possibility.
Although hiring Rivers would be an unconventional decision, the move could generate excitement throughout Raleigh and give the program a recognizable face to lead its next chapter.
Rivers Has Deep Connections to NC State
Rivers starred at NC State from 2000 through 2003, establishing himself as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in school history. His success with the Wolfpack helped propel him into the NFL, where he became one of the league’s most productive passers during his time with the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers.
Rivers spent most of his professional career with the Chargers before finishing his initial NFL run with Indianapolis in 2020. He later returned to the Colts late in the 2025 season, demonstrating that his passion for football remained strong.
Since moving away from playing professionally, Rivers has built experience on the sidelines. He became the head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama, in 2021 and has helped establish a successful program.
His high school coaching background would give NC State a candidate who understands leadership and player development, although moving directly into a major college head coaching position would represent a significant step up.
A Family Connection Could Make the Move More Intriguing
One of the most interesting parts of the situation involves Rivers’ son, Gunner, a highly regarded quarterback recruit who has committed to NC State for the 2027 recruiting class.
If Rivers takes the job, the Wolfpack could potentially have a father-son connection at the center of its football program. That possibility would create an immediate storyline for the program and could help generate recruiting attention.
However, NC State would need to evaluate Rivers on more than his name recognition. Modern college football requires extensive recruiting operations, transfer portal management, fundraising and navigating name, image and likeness opportunities.
Building a strong staff and surrounding Rivers with experienced college assistants would be essential if the Wolfpack decided to pursue him.
Could Rivers Be the Right Choice?
Rivers would bring credibility, football knowledge and a strong connection to the university. Nevertheless, his lack of collegiate coaching experience makes him a risk compared with established college coaches.
NC State is beginning a national search after moving on from Doeren, who led the program for 14 seasons. The Wolfpack must identify someone capable of competing consistently in the ACC and taking the program to another level.
Whether Rivers ultimately gets the opportunity remains uncertain, but his name has quickly become one to watch. For NC State, hiring a program legend could be a bold move that energizes the fan base and potentially changes the direction of Wolfpack football.
