New York Secures 27-21 Victory in J.J. McCarthy’s First Start
The New York Giants delivered one of their biggest wins of the season Sunday, defeating the Houston Texans 27-21 in overtime at NRG Stadium. Devin Singletary scored the game winning touchdown on a 30 yard run, capping off a dramatic finish that gave New York a much needed victory.
The Giants improved to 4-2-1 with the win, while Houston dropped to 2-5 after suffering another disappointing defeat. New York entered the game looking for a spark with J.J. McCarthy making his first start for the team, and the young quarterback helped deliver an important result.
McCarthy Makes an Immediate Impact
McCarthy looked comfortable in his Giants debut as a starter, completing 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards. He connected with Malik Nabers for several explosive gains, including a 42 yard completion that helped set up an early touchdown by Tyrone Tracy Jr.
New York also received a major contribution from Jameis Winston, who scored on a one yard quarterback sneak to give the Giants a 14-6 lead in the second quarter.
Houston responded before halftime when C.J. Stroud connected with Marvin Harrison Jr. for a six yard touchdown. The Texans converted the two point attempt to tie the game at 14-14.
The teams traded punts throughout a scoreless third quarter before New York finally broke through again in the fourth.
Skattebo Powers the Giants
Running back Cam Skattebo played a major role in the victory, rushing for a career high 124 yards on 17 carries. He scored on a 16 yard run in the fourth quarter, putting New York ahead 21-14 with less than nine minutes remaining.
Houston refused to go away. Stroud led a late drive and found Xavier Hutchinson for a three yard touchdown with 52 seconds left, tying the game at 21-21 and forcing overtime.
The Texans received the ball first in overtime, but the Giants defense forced a punt to give the offense another opportunity.
Skattebo immediately changed the game with a 42 yard run that moved New York into scoring position. On the following play, Singletary broke free for a 30 yard touchdown, ending the game and sending the Giants home with the victory.
Giants Gain Momentum
Nabers finished with seven catches for 111 yards, while Stroud threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns.
The victory gives New York valuable momentum heading into its bye week. For Houston, the loss adds pressure to a season that has not gone according to plan.
With McCarthy settling in, Skattebo producing on the ground and the defense delivering in overtime, the Giants have plenty of reasons to feel encouraged after Sunday’s thrilling finish.
