Rams Hit Rock Bottom Against Arizona

The Los Angeles Rams entered the 2026 NFL season with Super Bowl expectations, but six games into the year, the team is facing serious questions. After a disappointing 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, the Rams have fallen to 2-4 and sit near the bottom of the NFC West.

What makes the situation more concerning is that Los Angeles has enough talent to compete with the best teams in the league. However, costly mistakes, inconsistent quarterback play, injuries and special-teams problems have prevented the Rams from reaching their potential.

Matthew Stafford Must Be More Consistent

Quarterback Matthew Stafford remains one of the most important pieces of the Rams’ offense, but his performances have been inconsistent. Although the offense can move the football, turning those yards into points has become a major challenge.

Against Arizona, Stafford completed 25 of 33 passes for 222 yards and threw a late touchdown to give Los Angeles a brief fourth-quarter lead. Despite that effort, the Rams struggled to finish drives and capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Head coach Sean McVay has also expressed frustration with the team’s mistakes, particularly on offense. Turnovers, negative plays and missed opportunities have repeatedly stopped the Rams from building momentum.

Los Angeles needs Stafford and the offense to become more efficient if it hopes to turn its season around.

Injuries Are Hurting the Defense

The Rams have also been dealing with significant injuries on defense. Star defensive end Myles Garrett remains on injured reserve with a knee injury, while cornerback Trent McDuffie missed Sunday’s game with a groin injury.

Those absences have made it more difficult for Los Angeles to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks and cover receivers. The defense kept Arizona out of the end zone on Sunday, but the Cardinals still managed to win through six field goals.

The Rams need their defense to create more game-changing plays while their injured stars work toward returning.

Special Teams and Costly Mistakes

Special teams have become another major concern. New kicker Blake Grupe injured his knee during Sunday’s game, forcing punter Ethan Evans to handle kicking duties. That left Los Angeles with fewer options during crucial scoring situations.

A late defensive penalty also helped Arizona move into field-goal range for the game-winning kick.

Can the Rams Turn Things Around?

The Rams still have time to recover, but their margin for error is shrinking. McVay must find ways to clean up the mistakes, improve offensive execution and get more production from the defense.

Los Angeles has the talent to compete, but talent alone will not fix its problems. Unless the Rams start playing more disciplined football, their Super Bowl hopes could disappear much sooner than anyone expected.
