Mustangs Improve to 5-1 With 23-13 Win Over Cavaliers
The SMU Mustangs continued their strong season Saturday, defeating the Virginia Cavaliers 23-13 in Dallas. Behind an efficient performance from quarterback Kevin Jennings and a strong showing from the running game, No. 24 SMU picked up another important Atlantic Coast Conference victory and extended its winning streak to three games.
The win improved SMU to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in ACC play, keeping the Mustangs in the mix as the conference race continues to develop. Virginia fell to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play after struggling to generate enough offense against SMU’s defense.
Kevin Jennings Leads the Offense
Jennings played a key role in the victory, completing 23 of 36 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. The Mustangs quarterback consistently moved the offense down the field and delivered two important scoring plays that helped SMU maintain control.
His first touchdown came on a six yard pass to tight end Randy Pittman Jr. in the second quarter. The Mustangs converted a crucial fourth down before Jennings found Pittman in the end zone, giving SMU a scoring boost in a competitive first half.
Jennings connected with Jalen Hale for a 37 yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Hale stretched toward the pylon to complete the play, extending the Mustangs’ lead to 23-13 and giving the home team some breathing room.
Running back Kendrick Raphael also delivered a strong performance, rushing for 124 yards. His production helped SMU establish balance offensively and keep Virginia’s defense from focusing entirely on the passing game.
Virginia Struggles to Keep Pace
Virginia had opportunities to remain competitive but could not find enough offensive consistency to complete the comeback.
Quarterback Beau Pribula finished with 137 passing yards on 13-of-22 attempts. He also rushed for a touchdown on a one yard fourth-down plunge in the first half, providing the Cavaliers with their only touchdown of the afternoon.
However, Virginia finished with just 258 total yards as SMU’s defense continued to make life difficult for opposing offenses. The Cavaliers have now been held below 300 total yards in three consecutive games.
SMU Builds Momentum
Another important part of the victory was the performance of kicker Brendan Baird, who connected on field goals of 23, 45 and 26 yards. His 45 yard kick gave SMU a 13-10 halftime advantage after a defensive penalty extended the first-half scoring opportunity.
The Mustangs will look to carry that momentum into next week’s matchup against California as they continue pursuing a strong finish in the ACC.
For Virginia, the loss creates another challenge as the Cavaliers prepare to host Duke. SMU’s combination of quarterback play, rushing production and defensive consistency proved decisive in Saturday’s 23-13 victory.
