Cleveland Overcomes Early Deficit to Take Game 1 Against Tampa Bay
The Cleveland Guardians delivered a late offensive surge Monday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. After falling behind early, Cleveland rallied with timely hitting and powerful home runs to take control of the series and hand Tampa Bay its first loss of the postseason.
The Rays entered the matchup looking to protect home-field advantage at Tropicana Field, but Cleveland’s offense came alive in the later innings. The Guardians collected 14 hits and scored five runs across the final three innings to secure the victory.
Rays Strike First
Tampa Bay got off to an excellent start, scoring twice in the first inning. Junior Caminero delivered an RBI single before Jonny DeLuca followed with another run-scoring hit to give the Rays an early 2-0 lead.
Rays starter Drew Rasmussen settled in after the opening inning, keeping Cleveland off the scoreboard through the first five innings. He struck out seven batters and allowed two runs over six innings, giving Tampa Bay a strong chance to protect its advantage.
However, the Guardians gradually found their rhythm at the plate.
Rookie Chase DeLauter cut the deficit to 2-1 with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Patrick Bailey then tied the game in the seventh with another solo shot, sending the contest into the late innings with momentum shifting toward Cleveland.
Guardians Take Control Late
Cleveland broke the tie in the eighth inning against Tampa Bay’s bullpen. José Ramírez reached base before DeLauter doubled, putting runners in scoring position.
Nathaniel Lowe came through with the biggest hit of the night, delivering a two-run single to center field that gave the Guardians a 4-2 lead.
Tampa Bay attempted to respond when Cedric Mullins hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth, cutting Cleveland’s advantage to one run.
The Guardians answered again in the ninth. Ramírez drove in another run with a single before Jo Adell doubled home two more, extending the lead to 7-3 and putting the game out of reach.
Ramírez and DeLauter each finished with three hits, while DeLauter added a home run and scored three times.
Cleveland Gains Early Advantage
The victory gives Cleveland a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven ALCS and puts pressure on Tampa Bay to respond in Game 2.
The Rays showed early promise, but their bullpen struggled to hold the lead as Cleveland’s hitters capitalized on scoring opportunities.
Cleveland has seized the early momentum in the series. Tampa Bay will need a stronger late inning performance to even the matchup before the ALCS shifts to Cleveland.
