Minnesota Pulls Away in the Second Half
The Minnesota Vikings continued their impressive start to the 2026 NFL season on Sunday, defeating the New Orleans Saints 23-13 at the Caesars Superdome. Minnesota improved to 5-0 with another strong all-around performance, while New Orleans dropped to 1-4 after struggling to generate offense throughout the afternoon.
The Vikings relied on a balanced offensive attack, timely defensive plays and a strong second-half finish to secure the victory. Quarterback Kyler Murray and running back Aaron Jones led the way as Minnesota remained one of the NFL’s unbeaten teams.
Saints Take a Narrow Lead Into Halftime
Minnesota opened the scoring with a 40 yard field goal from kicker Will Reichard in the first quarter. The Saints responded late in the second quarter when running back Kendre Miller scored on a two-yard touchdown run, giving New Orleans a 7-3 advantage.
Reichard added another field goal before halftime, cutting the Saints’ lead to 7-6. Despite Minnesota controlling portions of the game, New Orleans entered the break with the advantage.
The Vikings came out of halftime ready to take control. After a fumble on the opening kickoff return gave Minnesota possession deep in Saints territory, Murray connected with Justin Jefferson for a 15 yard touchdown. Jefferson made an impressive catch in the end zone, putting the Vikings ahead 13-7.
Turnovers Keep New Orleans in the Game
The Saints answered with a defensive touchdown that briefly changed the momentum. Safety Jonas Sanker recovered a fumble and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 13. However, New Orleans missed the extra point, leaving the score even.
Minnesota’s defense also delivered important plays. Cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. intercepted Saints quarterback Tyler Shough, who finished with 96 passing yards and two interceptions. The Vikings limited New Orleans to just 142 total yards, making it difficult for the Saints to build sustained drives.
Aaron Jones Delivers the Finishing Blow
With the game tied early in the fourth quarter, Jones broke through for an eight-yard touchdown run to give Minnesota a 20-13 lead. Jones finished with 113 rushing yards on 25 carries, providing the Vikings with a reliable ground attack.
Reichard later connected on a 55-yard field goal to extend the lead to 23-13. Minnesota controlled the clock down the stretch and prevented the Saints from mounting another comeback.
Vikings Keep Building Momentum
Murray completed 24 of 30 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown while adding 51 rushing yards. Jefferson finished with six receptions for 79 yards and a score.
The victory keeps Minnesota undefeated at 5-0 and strengthens its position atop the NFC North. For New Orleans, offensive struggles and costly turnovers proved too much to overcome as the Saints fell to 1-4.
