New York Finds a Way to Finish
The New York Jets finally got back into the win column Sunday, defeating the Cleveland Browns 17-12 in a rain-soaked battle at MetLife Stadium. Behind a strong defensive performance and a clutch fourth-quarter touchdown from running back Braelon Allen, New York snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-3 on the season.
The victory was especially important for the Jets after a difficult stretch of games. New York had struggled to put together a complete performance, but its defense and special teams delivered when the game was on the line. Cleveland, meanwhile, saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.
Garrett Wilson Gives the Jets an Early Lead
New York opened the game with an impressive offensive drive led by quarterback Geno Smith and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. Smith connected with Wilson three times on the possession, including a 32-yard touchdown pass that gave the Jets a 7-0 advantage.
Wilson finished with seven receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown, providing the Jets with their biggest threat through the air.
Cleveland answered with two field goals from kicker Andre Szmyt, cutting the deficit to 7-6. The Browns had opportunities to take control, but New York’s defense consistently made key stops and kept the visitors out of the end zone during the first half.
Smith finished 17 of 30 passing for 182 yards and one touchdown. Although the Jets struggled to sustain drives for much of the afternoon, they managed to stay within striking distance.
Defense Keeps Cleveland in Check
The Jets’ defensive front played a major role in the victory. Rookie pass rusher David Bailey recorded three sacks, helping New York finish with eight sacks of Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Watson completed 15 of 33 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown. Cleveland struggled to generate consistent offense, particularly in the rain, and finished with just 197 total net yards.
New York extended its lead to 10-6 early in the fourth quarter when Jason Sanders connected on a 54-yard field goal.
Braelon Allen Delivers the Game Winning Play
Cleveland finally took the lead when Watson connected with rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston for a 29-yard touchdown. However, a missed extra point left the Browns ahead only 12-10 with just over six minutes remaining.
The Jets received a major break late in the fourth quarter when a high snap sailed past Browns punter Corey Bojorquez. New York recovered the loose ball at Cleveland’s 23-yard line.
Three plays later, Allen found an opening and sprinted 22 yards into the end zone, putting the Jets ahead 17-12 with 3:01 remaining. Allen finished with 116 rushing yards on 24 carries and delivered the biggest play of the game.
Jets Defense Seals the Victory
Cleveland had one final opportunity to respond, but New York’s defense refused to give up another score. Will McDonald IV strip-sacked Watson on fourth down, recovering the fumble to seal the victory.
The win gives the Jets much-needed momentum heading into their next matchup. After a difficult three-game stretch, New York showed it can win with defense, physical running and timely plays.
