The Odell Beckham Jr. reunion in New York is already over.
The New York Giants are releasing the veteran wide receiver after just three games, bringing a quick end to OBJ’s second stint with the franchise that drafted him. The move was reported Tuesday, Sept. 29, after Beckham struggled to find a role in the Giants’ offense.
Beckham returned to New York this offseason hoping to revive his NFL career with the team where he became a household name. Instead, the 33-year-old leaves without recording a single catch in his three appearances.
OBJ Never Found His Footing
Beckham made the Giants’ initial 53-man roster after an impressive training camp, giving fans hope that the former star receiver could make an impact in his return.
However, opportunities were limited once the regular season began.
Across New York’s first three games, Beckham played approximately 20 offensive snaps and received just one target. That lone opportunity came during Sunday’s 12-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans, but he was unable to bring in the pass.
Despite the lack of production, Beckham remained a popular figure among Giants fans. Supporters at MetLife Stadium chanted his name during Sunday’s game, hoping to see the veteran get more involved.
Instead, his time in New York came to an abrupt end.
A Crowded Wide Receiver Room
One of the biggest factors in Beckham’s limited role was the competition for playing time.
The Giants have young star Malik Nabers, veteran Darnell Mooney and rookie Malachi Fields among their receiving options. Beckham found himself behind those players and struggled to earn consistent opportunities.
New York also has roster decisions to make as it reshapes its offense. The Giants are bringing in punt returner Braxton Berrios, giving the team another option who can contribute on special teams.
Beckham, meanwhile, was not being used in that role, making it more difficult for him to justify a spot on the active roster.
Remembering OBJ’s First Giants Stint
Although this reunion did not work out, Beckham’s legacy in New York remains significant.
The Giants selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and he quickly became one of the league’s most exciting young players.
Beckham won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2014 and made three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2014 through 2016. His spectacular one-handed catch against the Dallas Cowboys remains one of the most memorable plays in NFL history.
During his first five seasons with New York, Beckham recorded 390 receptions for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns. He ranks second in franchise history in receiving yards.
After leaving the Giants in 2019, Beckham played for the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins. He also won Super Bowl LVI with the Rams.
What’s Next for Beckham?
The biggest question now is whether another NFL team will give Beckham an opportunity.
He did not play during the 2025 season and returned to the league hoping to show he could still contribute. His release leaves his immediate future uncertain, but his experience and past production could still make him an option for a team looking for receiver depth.
For the Giants, the decision closes the door on a reunion that generated plenty of excitement but never translated into production on the field.
Beckham once became one of the biggest stars in football while wearing a Giants uniform. This time, his return lasted only three games.
The next chapter of OBJ’s career remains to be written.
