The Florida Gators have officially arrived.
No. 21 Florida delivered one of the biggest upsets of the college football season Saturday, dominating No. 4 Ole Miss in a stunning 52-28 victory inside The Swamp.
In a matchup against one of the nation’s top teams, the Gators put together a statement performance on both sides of the ball. Florida controlled the game early, survived a brief Ole Miss rally and then exploded offensively in the fourth quarter to turn a competitive SEC showdown into a blowout.
For first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, this is the kind of victory that can change the direction of a season.
Florida Comes Out Firing
The Gators wasted little time making their presence felt.
Florida jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, putting pressure on an Ole Miss team that entered the game undefeated and ranked fourth nationally.
The Rebels finally found some points in the second quarter, but Florida continued to answer. The Gators carried a 17-6 advantage into halftime, putting themselves in position to pull off a major upset.
Playing in front of a packed crowd at The Swamp, Florida looked confident and aggressive against one of the SEC’s top programs.
Ole Miss Makes a Push
Ole Miss refused to go away quietly.
The Rebels found their offensive rhythm in the third quarter, scoring 15 points and attempting to climb back into the game. After entering halftime trailing by 11, Ole Miss made things much more competitive as the two teams traded scores.
But every time the Rebels appeared to be gaining momentum, Florida had an answer.
The Gators continued moving the football and refused to let Ole Miss take control of the game. What could have become a tense finish instead turned into an opportunity for Florida to deliver the knockout blow.
The Gators Pull Away in the Fourth
Florida saved its best football for the final quarter.
The Gators scored 21 points in the fourth quarter while holding Ole Miss to just seven, pulling away for the impressive 52-28 victory.
The offensive explosion showcased Florida’s ability to finish drives and put a game out of reach. After entering the fourth quarter with a 31-21 lead, the Gators completely shut the door on the Rebels.
Running back Jadan Baugh continued to be a major part of Florida’s offensive attack, giving the Gators a powerful presence in the backfield. Quarterback Aaron Philo and the passing game also helped Florida keep the Ole Miss defense under pressure.
It was a complete offensive performance from a team that has looked increasingly dangerous in recent weeks.
Jon Sumrall Has Florida Rolling
This victory means more than just another win on the schedule.
Florida entered the season looking to establish a new identity under Sumrall. After opening the year with three straight victories, the Gators have now added a top-five upset to their résumé.
The win over Ole Miss also builds on Florida’s impressive road victory over Auburn last week. The Gators have now won consecutive SEC games, defeating two challenging opponents while building confidence heading into the rest of the season.
At 4-0, Florida is undefeated and gaining serious momentum.
Florida Sends a Message to the SEC
The Gators entered Saturday ranked No. 21, while Ole Miss arrived as the nation’s No. 4 team. By the final whistle, Florida had turned that ranking difference into a 24-point statement victory.
There is still plenty of football left to play, but this performance gives Florida fans plenty of reasons to believe in what Sumrall is building.
The Gators showed they can compete with the best teams in the country — and do more than just compete.
They can dominate.
Florida took down a top-five opponent, improved to 4-0 and gave the rest of the SEC something to think about.
The Swamp was rocking on Saturday, and the Gators gave their fans a performance they won’t soon forget.
