The San Francisco 49ers are off to a 2-0 start, and Brock Purdy looks like a quarterback ready to take his game to another level.
San Francisco dominated the Miami Dolphins 35-13 on Sunday, following up its Week 1 victory over the Los Angeles Rams with another convincing performance. The 49ers have now opened the season with consecutive wins of at least 20 points for the first time in franchise history.
Purdy was at the center of it all.
The 26-year-old quarterback completed 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception. He also rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown, finishing with a remarkable 149.1 passer rating. At one point, Purdy completed 18 straight passes.
What stands out most is how efficient Purdy has been.
The 49ers scored touchdowns on each of their first five drives, something they had not accomplished since 1991. Purdy consistently made the right reads, delivered accurate throws and kept San Francisco’s offense moving despite Miami trying to slow down the run game.
He also showed his ability to make plays outside of structure. Purdy’s connection with Mike Evans helped set up Christian McCaffrey’s second touchdown, while George Kittle added a 12-yard touchdown reception. Kyle Juszczyk also caught a touchdown pass from Purdy in the third quarter.
McCaffrey had another milestone performance, scoring twice to reach 100 career touchdowns in just 114 games, but Purdy’s performance was the biggest reason San Francisco’s offense looked so difficult to stop.
Through two games, Purdy has looked calm, aggressive and extremely efficient. Head coach Kyle Shanahan specifically praised his quarterback’s growth and performance following Sunday’s win.
There is still a long way to go in the season, but the early results are hard to ignore. The 49ers are 2-0, their offense is clicking and Purdy appears to be playing with tremendous confidence.
If he continues playing at this level, San Francisco could have something very special brewing.
