The Atlanta Falcons finally have a quarterback plan.
That might be the problem.
Tua Tagovailoa will start Week 1 against Pittsburgh. Michael Penix Jr. is waiting in the wings. Cooper Rush is the backup. Rookie Jack Strand sits behind them.
On paper, that sounds like depth.
In reality, it might be the worst possible middle ground for Atlanta.
Tua has talent. Penix has talent. Both also come with enormous availability questions.
Atlanta signed Tua to a one-year deal after Miami moved on. Penix is still working his way back from a torn ACL. The Falcons already have enough uncertainty at quarterback without needing another injury storyline.
And then there is Cooper Rush.
This is where Falcons fans enter football purgatory.
Rush is probably good enough to keep Atlanta competitive.
He is probably not good enough to make the Falcons legitimate NFC South favorites.
That is a brutal place to live.
If this season is truly a bridge, why not embrace it?
Give Jack Strand a chance.
If Strand works, Atlanta may have found something.
If he struggles, the Falcons can finally get a high draft pick and attack the quarterback position again.
Best case: You find your guy. Worst case: You tank.
Instead, Atlanta could spend another year hovering around .500.
That is the definition of NFL hell.
Atlanta Could Have Simply Bought Another Option
The frustrating part is that the Falcons have done plenty right under the new regime.
Kevin Stefanski brings credibility. Ian Cunningham brings a strong personnel background. The roster still has legitimate pieces.
Bijan Robinson is a star.
Drake London is a star.
Kyle Pitts remains a major talent.
The Falcons do not need to tear everything down.
They needed to solve quarterback.
And if the answer wasn’t already on the roster, Atlanta could have looked outside the building.
Sometimes the simplest solution is the obvious one.
Spend a fourth-round pick.
A fourth-rounder is not franchise-altering capital.
If there was a young quarterback available who offered a better long-term bet than cycling between injured veterans and uncertain reclamation projects, Atlanta should have explored it.
Instead, the Falcons are betting that one of Tua, Penix or Rush eventually solves the problem.
That is a lot of hoping.
And Atlanta fans have done enough hoping at quarterback.
They deserve an actual plan.
Because right now, the Falcons have somehow constructed a quarterback room where almost every outcome feels bad.
That is an impressive level of dysfunction.
