Tua Tagovailoa has officially won the quarterback battle in Atlanta.

The Atlanta Falcons announced Monday that Tagovailoa will be their starting quarterback for Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, ending a months-long competition with Michael Penix Jr.

For Tagovailoa, the decision represents a major opportunity to revive his career after a difficult final season in Miami.

Tua Gets Another Opportunity

Tagovailoa joined Atlanta this offseason after the Miami Dolphins released him following six seasons with the franchise.

The former first-round pick now gets a fresh start under head coach Kevin Stefanski, who ultimately decided that Tagovailoa was the most prepared option heading into the regular season.

Tagovailoa received significantly more first-team work throughout training camp because Penix was recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season. Penix was cleared for 11-on-11 work late in camp but did not play in any preseason games.

Penix Will Have to Wait

Penix started nine games for Atlanta in 2025 before suffering his season-ending injury.

The Falcons are clearly being cautious with their young quarterback, with Stefanski confirming that Penix will be inactive for the opener. Cooper Rush will serve as Tagovailoa’s backup against Pittsburgh.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the competition is permanently over.

If Tagovailoa struggles early, Atlanta could eventually turn back to Penix once he is fully ready.

A Huge Chance for Tua

Tagovailoa showed flashes during the preseason, including a strong performance against his former team. He completed 7 of 8 passes for 95 yards against Miami and led an eight-play, 60-yard touchdown drive on Atlanta’s opening possession.

Now comes the part that matters most.

Tagovailoa will make his first start for Atlanta against the Steelers in Pittsburgh, giving him an immediate opportunity to prove that he can still be a starting-caliber NFL quarterback.

Tua Tagovailoa has been given another chance. The Falcons believe he is the right man to lead them into Week 1, and now it’s up to Tua to prove that Atlanta made the right decision.
