Mississippi State may have finally found the quarterback it has been searching for.
After years of uncertainty at the position, sophomore Kamario Taylor delivered a performance that has Bulldogs fans dreaming much bigger after Mississippi State’s season-opening 62-13 demolition of Louisiana-Monroe.
Taylor wasn’t simply good. He was electric.
Taylor Takes Over
The sophomore quarterback finished the night with 354 passing yards and four touchdowns, while adding another 59 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He accounted for 413 total yards and didn’t throw an interception.
Taylor immediately showed why Mississippi State entered the season with so much excitement surrounding him.
He connected with Sanfrisco Magee for a touchdown, found Zion Ragins for another score and later hit Anthony Evans III for a 10-yard touchdown. Then, on the opening play of the second half, Taylor delivered perhaps his biggest throw of the night, finding Marquis Johnson for a 70-yard touchdown.
A New Era in Starkville
Mississippi State entered 2026 with Taylor already established as its starting quarterback. The Bulldogs believed in his ability despite the fact that he had only two career starts entering the season.
Saturday night showed why.
Taylor looked comfortable running Jeff Lebby’s offense and gave Mississippi State something it desperately needs in the SEC: a quarterback capable of making plays with both his arm and his legs.
The Bulldogs also produced a school-record 762 yards of total offense, showing that this offense could be much more dangerous than it has been in recent seasons.
Now Comes the Real Test
Of course, one dominant win over ULM doesn’t automatically make Taylor an SEC star.
The real test comes next.
Mississippi State travels to face Minnesota on Sept. 12, giving Taylor his first opportunity of the season to prove that Saturday’s performance was more than just a great night against a Group of Five opponent.
If Taylor can continue playing at this level, the Bulldogs could suddenly become a much more interesting team in the SEC.
Mississippi State has been searching for stability at quarterback. After one spectacular night in Starkville, it looks like the Bulldogs may have finally found their guy. Kamario Taylor has the talent, the confidence and now the opportunity to become the face of Mississippi State football.
