C.J. Stroud has heard the criticism.
After bursting onto the NFL scene as a rookie, the Houston Texans quarterback has watched his production decline in each of his first three seasons. His 2025 campaign was particularly disappointing, as Stroud finished with 3,041 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also struggled badly in the playoffs, turning the ball over seven times in two games.
But 2026 could be the season when Stroud reminds everyone why he was once considered one of the NFL’s brightest young quarterbacks.
Stroud Has Something to Prove
Stroud has been vocal about his confidence heading into the new season, saying he believes he is still an elite quarterback and is ready to return to his best form.
That confidence could be exactly what Houston needs.
The Texans still believe Stroud is their franchise quarterback, and the organization has continued building around him. Houston strengthened its offensive line and added veteran running back David Montgomery, hoping to give Stroud a more balanced offense and better protection.
The Weapons Are Still There
One of the biggest reasons for optimism is Nico Collins.
Collins remains one of the league’s most dangerous receivers and gives Stroud a legitimate No. 1 target. Houston also added Kayshon Boutte after injuries to Jayden Higgins and Tank Dell created uncertainty at receiver.
If Stroud can develop chemistry with the new pieces while staying healthy, the Texans’ offense could look much different this season.
The Texans Need Their Quarterback
Houston has won at least 10 games in each of DeMeco Ryans’ first three seasons as head coach, including a 12-5 record last year. The defense remains one of the team’s biggest strengths, but the Texans ultimately need Stroud to take the next step if they want to make a deep playoff run.
The pressure is real.
So is the opportunity.
C.J. Stroud doesn’t need to become the quarterback he was as a rookie. He simply needs to become a better version of himself. If he can protect the football, stay healthy and consistently make the big throws, 2026 could be the year Stroud silences the doubters and leads the Texans toward their biggest season yet.
