Harrison Smith isn’t ready to call it a career just yet.
The Minnesota Vikings announced that the veteran safety is returning for the 2026 season, giving Smith another opportunity to suit up for the franchise where he has spent his entire 15-year NFL career. The 37-year-old had seriously considered retirement during the offseason, making his return one of the biggest late roster moves for Minnesota.
The Hitman Is Back
Smith has become one of the most respected players in Vikings history since Minnesota selected him in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Now, after 14 seasons, six Pro Bowl selections and a First-Team All-Pro season in 2017, Smith will get another chance to add to his legacy.
The veteran safety reportedly agreed to a one-year contract worth $12.25 million, with incentives that could push the deal to $16.25 million.
Still Producing at 37
While Smith is no longer the young defensive playmaker he was earlier in his career, he has continued to make an impact.
Last season, Smith appeared in 15 games and recorded 54 tackles, two interceptions and a sack. He also tied for the team lead with 10 passes defended.
For his career, Smith has accumulated 1,180 tackles, 39 interceptions, 21.5 sacks and 106 passes defended in 207 regular-season games.
His 39 interceptions also make him the NFL’s active leader in that category.
A Major Boost for Minnesota
Smith’s return gives Brian Flores’ defense something that can’t easily be replaced: experience.
The Vikings have a younger safety group surrounding him, and Smith’s ability to communicate, diagnose offenses and provide leadership could be extremely valuable as Minnesota prepares for another season.
The Vikings begin the 2026 regular season on September 13 against the Green Bay Packers, meaning Smith has only a short time to get ready for his latest NFL campaign.
After it appeared that the final chapter of his career had been written, Harrison Smith has decided there is still football left to play.
The Hitman is back, and Vikings fans will get at least one more season to watch one of the greatest defensive players in franchise history.
