The Houston Rockets have made a major commitment to one of the brightest young players in the NBA.
The Rockets have signed guard Amen Thompson to a five-year, $208 million contract extension, keeping the 23-year-old in Houston through the 2031-32 season. The deal also includes a 10% trade kicker.
Thompson entered the NBA as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and has steadily developed into one of Houston’s most important players. After averaging 9.5 points as a rookie and 14.1 points in his second season, Thompson took another major step forward during the 2025-26 campaign.
He averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while starting all 79 games he played. He also led the entire NBA in minutes played.
What makes Thompson particularly valuable is his versatility. He can defend multiple positions, rebound at a high level and handle the ball, giving Houston a player capable of impacting the game in several different ways.
The Rockets clearly believe his best basketball is still ahead of him.
“Amen represents everything we want our organization to be about,” general manager Rafael Stone said, praising Thompson’s two-way ability, toughness and work ethic.
The contract is also significant because Thompson could have potentially received a maximum five-year deal worth roughly $252 million. Instead, Houston reached an agreement below the maximum, giving the franchise additional financial flexibility while still making Thompson one of the highest-paid young players in the league.
The extension continues Houston’s effort to build around its young core. Thompson joins Alperen Şengün, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason as key young players locked into long-term deals. With Kevin Durant also in the picture, the Rockets are assembling a roster with championship aspirations.
Now the pressure shifts to Thompson.
A $208 million contract comes with enormous expectations, but Houston isn’t paying him solely for what he has already accomplished. The Rockets are betting on what he can become.
If Thompson continues developing his offensive game while maintaining his defensive impact, this deal could eventually look like a bargain.
The Rockets have officially decided: Amen Thompson is part of their future.
