Spain and Uruguay meet Friday knowing the group remains completely up for grabs. Spain enters atop the standings with four points and can clinch first place with a victory. Uruguay, meanwhile, sits on two points and finds itself in dangerous territory, needing at least a draw to keep its knockout-stage hopes alive and remain in strong position to advance as one of the tournament’s best third-place teams.
Nothing is settled.
Spain leads the group with four points, followed by Cape Verde with two, Uruguay with two and Saudi Arabia with one. With Cape Verde facing Saudi Arabia later Friday, every team still has a path to the Round of 32, and three nations can still finish atop the group.
That’s about as good as tournament football gets.
For Spain, the objective is simple: take care of business and avoid scoreboard watching. A win guarantees the group title and a favorable path into the knockout rounds.
Uruguay faces far more pressure. A draw would keep La Celeste alive and likely position them well in the race among the best third-place finishers. A loss, however, would leave their fate hanging by a thread and dependent on other results.
Every goal could reshape the standings. Every point matters.
With first place still available and every nation still alive entering the final day, Group H has become one of the tournament’s most entertaining races. Friday night should provide plenty more drama.
