Williams Delivers Big Game as Cowboys Edge Giants in Overtime

Running back solidifies role as Dallas’ top option with 130 all-purpose yards, high efficiency

DALLAS (AP) — Javonte Williams delivered a breakout performance Sunday, strengthening his case as the Dallas Cowboys’ lead running back in a 40-37 overtime win against the New York Giants.

Williams rushed 18 times for 97 yards and one touchdown and added six catches for 33 yards. His 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave Dallas its first lead of the game and underscored his ability to produce in critical moments.

Advanced metrics highlighted his impact. Williams averaged 4.9 yards after contact per carry and forced six missed tackles. He also broke off three runs of 10 or more yards. Through two games, he has rushed for 151 yards on 33 carries, averaging 4.6 yards per attempt, while ranking among the league’s best in rushing success rate.

His running style provided balance to a pass-heavy offense. Dak Prescott attempted 52 passes, but Williams kept the Giants’ defense honest by gaining yardage after initial contact and converting short-yardage opportunities.

The performance marked Williams’ third rushing touchdown in two games with Dallas, placing him in a small group of Cowboys backs who have reached that total so quickly. His production in overtime also helped stabilize an offense that traded momentum swings with New York throughout the game.

Williams’ early success raises the likelihood of a permanent shift in the Cowboys’ backfield hierarchy. His ability to generate efficiency as both a runner and a receiver makes him a reliable option beyond simply filling carries.

The Cowboys now face the question of whether Williams can sustain this level of production, surpass the 100-yard rushing mark, and remain healthy over a full season. For now, his numbers suggest Dallas may have found its primary back.
