The San Francisco 49ers made history and made a statement at the same time.
San Francisco dominated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 Thursday night at Melbourne Cricket Ground in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia. More than 100,000 fans watched the NFC West rivals battle on the international stage, but the game ultimately belonged to the 49ers.
Purdy Leads San Francisco Offense
Brock Purdy looked comfortable when it mattered most, finishing with 205 passing yards and three touchdowns.
After a slow opening quarter, Purdy found Demarcus Robinson for a 39 yard touchdown in the second quarter to give San Francisco the lead. He then connected with Mike Evans for a touchdown early in the second half before finding Deebo Samuel for another score later in the game.
Evans made an immediate impact in his 49ers debut, catching six passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. Christian McCaffrey also helped keep the offense moving, rushing for 68 yards.
Rams Offense Struggles
Los Angeles simply couldn’t find enough offense against the San Francisco defense.
Matthew Stafford finished 15-of-25 for 155 yards and an interception. Puka Nacua led the Rams with five catches for 74 yards, but the offense repeatedly stalled when it needed to make plays.
The Rams’ only touchdown came from Kyren Williams, who scored on a five-yard run in the second quarter.
Perhaps the biggest defensive moment came in the third quarter when San Francisco stopped Stafford on a fourth-down quarterback sneak near the goal line, preventing Los Angeles from cutting into the 17-7 deficit.
San Francisco Pulls Away
The 49ers completely took control after halftime.
San Francisco’s defense continued to frustrate Stafford while Purdy and the offense steadily extended the lead. The 49ers finished with 379 total yards compared to 291 for Los Angeles and forced two Rams turnovers.
Meanwhile, Myles Garrett’s highly anticipated Rams debut was quiet. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year finished without a recorded tackle.
A Statement Victory
The Rams entered the season as one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl, making this result even more impressive for San Francisco.
The 49ers not only won the historic international matchup — they dominated one of the NFC’s most talented teams.
San Francisco now begins the season 1-0, while Los Angeles has plenty to fix before its next game.
The NFL came to Australia expecting a spectacle, and the 49ers delivered one — just not the kind the Rams wanted.
