Klay Thompson Expected to Join Miami Heat After Mavericks Buyout

Veteran Sharpshooter Headed to South Beach

Klay Thompson is expected to continue his NBA career with the Miami Heat after reaching a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks, according to multiple reports. Thompson must first clear waivers before he can officially sign with Miami.

The move would give the Heat another proven veteran and one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. The four time NBA champion spent last season in Dallas, averaging 11.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting 38.3 percent from three-point range.

Perfect Fit Around Giannis

Thompson’s arrival could be especially important for a Miami team built around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Both players can create offense near the basket, making perimeter shooting a major need for the Heat.

Even at 36 years old, Thompson remains a dangerous catch-and-shoot threat. His reputation alone can force defenses to stay close to him on the perimeter, potentially creating more driving lanes and opportunities for Miami’s stars.

The Heat recently acquired Antetokounmpo, giving the franchise championship aspirations heading into the 2026-27 season. Adding Thompson would give Miami another player with extensive playoff experience and four NBA championships on his résumé.

A New Chapter for Thompson

Thompson’s move to Miami comes after just one season with Dallas. He joined the Mavericks following 13 seasons with the Golden State Warriors, where he became one half of the famous “Splash Brothers” alongside Stephen Curry and helped the franchise win four championships.

His role decreased in Dallas, but his shooting ability remained valuable. Now, Thompson will have an opportunity to compete for another championship while playing alongside two of the league’s most talented frontcourt players.

If he officially clears waivers and signs with Miami, Thompson could immediately become one of the most important shooting options on the Heat’s roster.

For Miami, the potential signing represents another major step toward building a championship contender. For Thompson, it is a chance to begin a new chapter and pursue another NBA title in South Beach.
