LSU head coach Lane Kiffin is pushing for major changes to the NIL landscape, suggesting college football adopt a “rookie cap” similar to professional sports.
Kiffin argued that high school recruits who haven’t played a college snap shouldn’t command the same money as proven players. He proposed placing limits on freshman NIL earnings and even creating position-based salary caps.
“The kids that haven’t played at all coming out of high school should be making less,” Kiffin said.
His comments come as NIL deals continue to climb, with some elite recruits reportedly earning millions before ever stepping onto a college field. Whether a rookie cap is realistic remains to be seen, but Kiffin’s proposal is sure to spark plenty of debate across the sport.
