Ohio State’s Senior Day Decision Is Just Embarrassing

Ohio State has found a way to make Senior Day happen before its seniors have even played a game this season.

Seriously.

Ryan Day confirmed that Ohio State is moving its Senior Day celebration from the final home game of the season against Michigan to the Week 1 opener against Ball State. His reasoning? The Buckeyes want fewer distractions during Michigan week.

“We want to keep much of the focus on The Game,” Day explained, adding that Michigan week already comes with enough distractions.

And college football fans are understandably clowning Ohio State for it.

Senior Day is supposed to actually mean something. It’s traditionally the moment when seniors run onto their home field knowing it could be the final time they’ll ever play there. Families come onto the field, players get recognized and an entire college career gets celebrated.

Ohio State’s seniors will now get that emotional sendoff on September 5 — before playing six more home games.

How does that make any sense?

Even plenty of Ohio State fans weren’t thrilled when the move was announced, while the broader college football reaction has questioned why the Buckeyes couldn’t simply hold the ceremony during their second-to-last home game if Michigan week was really that big of a concern.

That’s probably the biggest issue here.

If Day wants absolutely nothing distracting his team before Michigan, fine. The rivalry obviously carries enormous importance at Ohio State.

But Week 1?

There were plenty of other options that wouldn’t completely defeat the purpose of Senior Day.

Instead, Ohio State will essentially tell a group of players, thanks for everything, enjoy your final game in the Horseshoe — and then welcome them back for another three months of home games.

Maybe this somehow helps Ohio State prepare for Michigan.

But from the outside looking in, it just feels incredibly forced.

Senior Day in Week 1 is cringe.
