World Cup Controversy Erupts as Top Referee Denied U.S. Entry

Just days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, one of the tournament’s most surprising off-field stories has emerged.

Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was set to become the first official from Somalia to referee at a FIFA World Cup, has been denied entry into the United States and will no longer participate in the tournament. FIFA confirmed Monday that Artan will be unable to train or officiate after U.S. authorities refused him entry upon arrival in Miami.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a Somali national arriving from Istanbul underwent additional inspection and was ultimately found inadmissible due to unspecified “vetting concerns.” Officials did not provide further details regarding the decision.

The situation has quickly become one of the biggest controversies surrounding the 2026 World Cup. Artan was not only Somalia’s lone representative among FIFA’s selected officials, but he was also recognized as the Confederation of African Football’s Best Male Referee in 2025. His appointment to the World Cup was viewed as a historic achievement for both Somali football and African officiating.

Reports indicate that Artan possessed a valid U.S. visa before traveling to the tournament. Nevertheless, immigration authorities determined he could not enter the country, ending his World Cup dream before it began. FIFA stated that immigration decisions remain the responsibility of host nations and are outside the governing body’s control.

The incident has reignited concerns over travel and visa complications ahead of a tournament being hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Somalia remains among the countries affected by U.S. travel restrictions, and critics argue that denying entry to a FIFA-appointed official undermines the global nature of the competition.

With the World Cup set to kick off this week, what should have been a landmark moment for Somali football has instead become one of the tournament’s first major controversies. For Artan, a referee who worked his way from Somalia’s domestic leagues to the world’s biggest sporting event, the opportunity of a lifetime will have to wait.
