There are bad baseball games, there are games that make you question everything you just watched, and then there’s whatever that was from the Tampa Bay Rays.
The World Series is supposed to be the biggest stage in baseball. Every pitch matters, every mistake gets magnified, and the pressure is unlike anything else in the sport. Fans wait all season for this moment, expecting high-level baseball, unforgettable performances, and the kind of drama that makes October special.
Instead, the Rays delivered a performance that left me wondering how a team gets to this point and looks like that when the stakes are at their highest.
I’ve watched plenty of baseball over the years, including games where everything seems to go wrong for one team. Sometimes the opposing pitcher is simply untouchable. Sometimes a few unlucky bounces change the entire game. That’s baseball. It happens.
But there’s a difference between getting beaten and making a game painful to watch.
That’s what made this one so frustrating. This is the World Series. There is no bigger opportunity for a franchise to show the world what it’s made of, and performances like this are exactly what fans remember long after the final out.
The Rays have earned their place on this stage, and nobody gets to the World Series by accident. But earning the opportunity and taking advantage of it are two completely different things.
What should have been a showcase of championship-level baseball instead became the kind of game that makes fans turn to social media just to see if everyone else is watching the same thing.
And that’s the biggest problem. You can lose in the World Series and still earn respect. You can get outplayed by a better team and walk away knowing you gave it everything you had. But when a performance leaves fans questioning what they just watched, the criticism is going to come.
Maybe this game will eventually become nothing more than a footnote in the larger story of the series. Maybe the Rays will respond and give their fans something to celebrate. Baseball has a funny way of changing the conversation in a hurry.
But right now, this was an incredibly difficult watch.
The World Series deserves better. The fans deserve better. And the Rays have a lot to answer for if they want to change the narrative.
