Whether it’s football in Morgantown, basketball season at the Coliseum or now baseball’s run to Omaha, the song has become synonymous with Mountaineer pride. The moment thousands of fans join together to sing John Denver’s classic, it’s impossible not to get chills.
The tradition works because it feels authentic. It isn’t manufactured. It isn’t forced. It’s a genuine reflection of the state’s culture and identity. Even neutral fans often find themselves singing along.
Now, West Virginia’s baseball team has given Mountaineer fans another reason to belt out the famous tune. The Mountaineers are in Omaha chasing a national championship and carrying the hopes of an entire state with them.
College sports are built on traditions, and West Virginia’s may be one of the best. It’s simple, recognizable and uniquely theirs.
