The Minnesota Vikings have officially made their decision at quarterback, naming Kyler Murray the team’s starter for the 2026 season. Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced the decision Tuesday, ending a training-camp competition between Murray and J.J. McCarthy.
Murray, 29, brings significantly more NFL experience to a Vikings offense looking to take the next step. The former No. 1 overall pick spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Arizona Cardinals before joining Minnesota on a one year contract this offseason. Despite playing only five games in 2025 because of a foot injury, Murray enters the season with 20,460 career passing yards and 121 touchdown passes.
For Minnesota, the decision is about more than experience. Murray’s ability to make plays both inside and outside the pocket gives O’Connell another dynamic weapon to build around. His mobility can force defenses to account for another dimension, while his experience could provide stability for an offense featuring star wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
McCarthy, meanwhile, will move into the backup role after starting 10 games last season. The former first round pick went 6-4 in those starts, but his development has been interrupted by injuries since entering the NFL. While the Vikings remain invested in his future, the organization clearly believes Murray gives them the best chance to win right now.
The move also gives Murray an opportunity to revive his career. After an uneven final stretch in Arizona, Minnesota represents a fresh start under O’Connell, an offensive-minded coach known for developing quarterbacks.
Now, the pressure shifts to Murray. The Vikings have made their choice, and their 2026 season will begin with the veteran quarterback leading the offense. If Murray can stay healthy and rediscover his playmaking ability, Minnesota could have a much more dangerous offense than many expected entering the offseason.
