Pirates Let Big Lead Slip Away in Heartbreaking Loss
East Carolina suffered a heartbreaking 30-17 overtime loss to UAB on Thursday night in Birmingham, Alabama, after the Pirates surrendered a late lead and watched the Blazers take control in overtime.
ECU appeared to be in position for an important road victory after building a 17-9 advantage, but UAB rallied in the closing moments of regulation before dominating the extra period. The defeat was a frustrating setback for the Pirates, who had entered the matchup looking to continue building momentum in American Conference play.
ECU Controls the First Half
The Pirates got off to a strong start behind quarterback Emory Williams and their running game. Williams connected with Ray Ray Joseph Jr. for a three-yard touchdown in the first quarter, giving ECU an early 7-0 lead.
East Carolina continued to control the game in the second quarter, adding another touchdown to take a 14-3 advantage into halftime. The Pirates’ offense found enough success to keep UAB on its heels, while the defense limited the Blazers’ scoring opportunities.
UAB managed a field goal in the second quarter and added two more in the third, gradually cutting into ECU’s lead. However, the Pirates answered with a 43-yard field goal from Noah Perez in the fourth quarter to extend their advantage to 17-9.
With time running out, ECU appeared close to securing the road win.
UAB Forces Overtime
The Blazers refused to give up, putting together a dramatic late drive to tie the game at 17. UAB moved 97 yards in less than a minute and a half, scoring a touchdown with little time remaining to force overtime.
The late collapse erased ECU’s eight-point cushion and sent the game into an extra period.
Blazers Take Over in Overtime
East Carolina had an opportunity to respond in overtime, but UAB quickly seized control. The Blazers scored after ECU’s overtime possession and then added a defensive touchdown, turning a close contest into a 30-17 victory.
The result was a painful one for the Pirates, who had held the advantage for much of the night but could not finish the job.
ECU Must Regroup
The loss leaves ECU with plenty to review, particularly its inability to close out a game it had largely controlled. The Pirates will need to improve their late-game execution as they continue their American Conference schedule.
For UAB, the comeback provides a major confidence boost. The Blazers showed resilience under pressure and capitalized when the opportunity arrived, completing a dramatic overtime victory.
