Tonight’s Game 5 between the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs does not feel like a normal conference finals game. It feels like the beginning of the NBA’s next era.
The series is tied 2-2 heading back to Oklahoma City, and historically, Game 5 in a tied playoff series is almost everything. Teams that win Game 5 after a 2-2 split go on to win the series around 82% of the time.
That alone makes this massive.
But this series feels even bigger because of who is involved.
On one side, you have MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the 64-win Thunder trying to prove they are ready to become the NBA’s next powerhouse. On the other side, you have Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs, who suddenly look like the most terrifying young team basketball has seen in years.
And after what happened in Game 4, all the pressure may now be on Oklahoma City.
The Spurs completely embarrassed the Thunder in a 103-82 blowout, holding OKC to just 33% shooting and an awful 6-for-33 from three. Wembanyama looked like the best player in the world again, dropping 33 points while dominating both ends of the floor.
Even more concerning for the Thunder was how San Antonio defended Shai. Instead of constantly doubling him, the Spurs trusted Stephon Castle to guard him straight up, and it worked. Gilgeous-Alexander finished with just 19 points in one of his worst playoff performances of the year.
Now Oklahoma City has to respond.
Lose tonight, and suddenly the defending champions are one loss away from elimination with Game 6 going back to San Antonio. Win tonight, and the Thunder regain control of the series while reminding everyone why they won 64 games in the first place.
This matchup also feels special because it is not just about today. It feels like a preview of the NBA for the next decade.
