The Miami Marlins may have pulled off the biggest steal of the 2026 MLB Draft by selecting Florida high school shortstop Jacob Lombard with the 14th overall pick. A local product out of Gulliver Prep, Lombard brings an exciting blend of athleticism, power, and upside that many believed made him one of the top talents available in this draft class.

Lombard is coming off a dominant senior season in which he hit .477 with nine home runs while showcasing elite tools across the board. Scouts grade his power at 60, his speed at 65, and believe he has the athletic ability to develop into an impact player on both sides of the ball. At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, he has the frame and talent to continue adding strength while remaining a premium athlete.

For the Marlins, this is exactly the type of high-upside selection that can change the future of an organization. Landing a player with Lombard’s combination of offensive potential, speed, and defensive ability at No. 14 feels like tremendous value. If he develops as expected, Miami could look back on this day as the moment it secured the biggest bargain of the entire first round.
