FORT WORTH, Texas — For much of its history, Texas Motor Speedway has drawn mixed — and often negative — reactions from fans. From controversial races to inconsistent racing quality, the 1.5-mile track has built a reputation that’s hard to ignore.
But as the saying goes, everything is bigger in Texas — including both the highs and the lows.
While recent years have brought criticism — including the widely debated 2022 All-Star Race — Texas has also produced its share of memorable moments. It didn’t take long for the track to make an impact, as Dale Earnhardt Jr. earned his first Cup Series victory there in 2000.
One of the track’s early highlights came in 2001, when a tightly packed field battled in the closing laps. Drivers including Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Dale Jarrett, and Steve Park were all in contention before Jarrett pulled away late for the win.
In 2004, the track delivered its first true photo finish, as Elliott Sadler narrowly held off Kasey Kahne in a dramatic ending. The excitement continued in 2007, with last-lap and late-race battles involving Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth, and Jimmie Johnson.
Not all moments at Texas have been about finishes. In 2008, Michael McDowell walked away from a violent qualifying crash, highlighting the safety advancements of NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow.
Championship drama has also played out at the speedway. In 2012, Johnson and Brad Keselowski battled late into the race, tightening the title fight. Two years later, a late restart incident between Keselowski and Gordon sparked a post-race altercation that became one of the most talked-about moments of the season.
Even after the 2017 reconfiguration, Texas has shown flashes of its potential. That fall, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. battled for the win in a race that reminded fans of what the track can produce at its best.
Today, Texas Motor Speedway remains one of the most polarizing tracks in NASCAR. While recent races have drawn criticism, its history shows that when the conditions are right, the racing can still deliver.
And if the lows have been as significant as they’ve seemed in recent years, history suggests the next high moment may not be far away.
