Tennessee hasn’t even played a game yet, and the Vols have already suffered a massive loss on defense.
Starting safety Edrees Farooq is expected to miss the entire 2026 season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in his right knee during fall camp.
That’s a brutal injury for a Tennessee defense that was hoping to take a major step forward under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.
Farooq started all 13 games last season and entered 2026 positioned to play an important role in Knowles’ defense, which puts plenty of responsibility on the safeties.
Now Tennessee has to figure out how to replace him just weeks before the season opener.
The most obvious candidate is Dejuan Lane, the Penn State transfer who already has experience playing under Knowles. Lane appeared in 13 games and made three starts last season and could now step into a starting role alongside Michigan transfer TJ Metcalf. Appalachian State transfer DJ Burks and sophomore Dylan Lewis could also see expanded roles.
The timing makes this even worse.
Tennessee opens against Furman before traveling to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech, and the Vols then host Texas on Sept. 26.
There is still talent in Tennessee’s secondary, especially after the Vols attacked the transfer portal during the offseason. Josh Heupel even said at SEC Media Days that this group had the potential to be one of the best secondaries Tennessee has had during his tenure.
But losing a proven starter before Week 1 changes things.
Tennessee entered 2026 needing its defense to improve after a disappointing 2025 season. Now Knowles will have to make that improvement happen without one of the players who was supposed to anchor his secondary.
That’s a rough way to start the season.
