Jim Knowles has completely transformed Tennessee’s defense into a national powerhouse, and the Volunteers might have the most dangerous unit in America.

Forget Georgia. Forget Ohio State. Forget Alabama.

The best defense in college football might be playing in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Jim Knowles has completely transformed the Volunteers in his first season as defensive coordinator, and Saturday’s dominant 26-10 victory over Alabama was the perfect example of just how dangerous this defense has become.

Tennessee absolutely embarrassed the Crimson Tide offensively, holding Alabama to just 201 total yards, forcing four turnovers and recording five sacks. The Volunteers also shut out Alabama throughout the entire second half.

And here’s the scary part: This defense might only be getting better.

Tennessee entered Saturday leading the nation with 25 sacks before adding five more against Alabama. Linebacker Jeremiah Telander recorded two sacks, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble, while Tyree Weathersby added two sacks of his own.

The secondary has been just as impressive. Dejuan Lane and Kayin Lee each recorded interceptions against Alabama, making life miserable for freshman quarterback Keelon Russell.

But perhaps the most remarkable part of Tennessee’s defensive transformation is how quickly Knowles has accomplished it.

Last season, the Volunteers ranked 92nd nationally in scoring defense and allowed nearly 397 yards per game. Through seven games this season, Tennessee has become one of the most disruptive defensive units in America.

And remember, Knowles helped Ohio State win a national championship with an elite defense before eventually making his way to Knoxville.

Now, he’s bringing that same championship mentality to Tennessee.

For years, Josh Heupel’s teams have been known for explosive offenses that could score on almost anyone. But defensive inconsistency often prevented the Volunteers from reaching their full potential.

That might finally be changing.

Tennessee sits at 6-1 with legitimate College Football Playoff aspirations, and its defense could be the difference between another good season and a championship run.

The rest of the SEC should be terrified. Tennessee no longer needs to score 40 points to beat elite opponents.

And with Jim Knowles running the defense, the Volunteers might have finally found the missing piece to becoming a national championship contender.
