The Sonsio Grand Prix always feels like the true green flag for the Month of May. Sure, the Indy 500 hype technically starts with testing, but this is where momentum becomes real. A clean weekend on the IMS road course can launch a driver into Indianapolis 500 qualifying with swagger, confidence and — maybe most importantly — a team believing it has the speed to contend for the Borg-Warner Trophy.
That’s why this weekend matters so much.
Look no further than Álex Palou. He’s turned the Indy GP into his personal playground, winning three straight road course races at IMS entering this weekend. INDYCAR itself pointed out Palou has 11 consecutive podium finishes on natural road courses and has become the benchmark everybody else is chasing.
But the fun part of the Sonsio Grand Prix isn’t just who wins. It’s spotting the drivers who desperately need a spark before the oval portion of May begins.
Josef Newgarden is one of them. The two-time Indy 500 winner knows how quickly the pressure ramps up at Penske when results aren’t coming. A podium on the road course would instantly calm the noise and remind the paddock why he remains one of the most dangerous drivers once cars hit the oval. Momentum matters in IndyCar, and a strong Saturday can completely change the tone entering qualifying week.
Then there’s Marcus Ericsson. The 2022 Indy 500 winner openly said Andretti found “promising” road course improvements at Barber and wants to build on that at IMS. Ericsson has quietly hovered around contention, but he needs a headline result. A top-five run Saturday could finally make him feel like a genuine 500 threat again instead of a sleeper pick.
Graham Rahal also enters May in an interesting spot. INDYCAR highlighted his resurgence entering Indianapolis after steady early-season results, and oddsmakers see him as a dark horse this weekend because of his strong IMS road course history. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has shown flashes of speed at Indy before, but converting that into a complete Month of May has been the missing piece.
And maybe nobody needs a clean, confidence-building weekend more than Pato O’Ward. He’s been consistent, but consistency alone doesn’t beat Palou. INDYCAR noted O’Ward is trying to close the championship gap through race wins, not just solid finishes. If Arrow McLaren unloads with real pace this weekend, suddenly the Indy 500 conversation gets a whole lot more interesting.
Historically, the Indy GP has a funny way of foreshadowing the rest of May. Teams that execute well here tend to carry sharper pit stops, better balance and stronger chemistry into the 500. James Hinchcliffe even noted that some drivers use the weekend to fully lock into “Month of May mode,” while others struggle to keep their focus off the big race ahead.
That’s what makes this event so compelling. It’s not just another points race. It’s the emotional launch point for the biggest month in American motorsports.
