SEATTLE — The United States had the stage, the draw and the moment. It still did not have the performance.
The U.S. men’s national team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup on Monday with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16, ending a tournament that once looked like the program’s best chance in decades to make a serious run.
Charles De Ketelaere scored twice for Belgium, while Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku also added goals. Malik Tillman briefly brought the Americans level with a free kick, but Belgium quickly took control again and punished repeated U.S. mistakes.
For the United States, the loss was not just another exit. It was a missed opportunity.
Playing on home soil, backed by large crowds and carrying momentum after a 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32, the Americans entered the Belgium match with a realistic path to the quarterfinals. Instead, they were beaten decisively and failed again to get past the round of 16.
U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said afterward that his team was “not good enough,” declining to blame outside noise surrounding Folarin Balogun’s overturned suspension.
That summed up the night. Belgium was cleaner, sharper and more composed. The U.S. was loose defensively, careless in possession and unable to match the moment once the game tilted away.
The result will sting because this was not supposed to feel like the same old story. This group was billed as deeper, more experienced and more prepared than past U.S. teams. More players are competing in Europe. The talent pool is stronger. The expectations were higher.
But the final product looked familiar.
The United States has spent years talking about closing the gap with the world’s best. Against Belgium, that gap was obvious. The Americans had energy and belief, but Belgium had quality and control.
