HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Fresh off his second straight Masters victory, Rory McIlroy will not be in the field for this week’s RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links — a decision that continues a pattern of selective scheduling for one of golf’s biggest stars.
McIlroy is skipping the Signature Event entirely, opting for rest after an emotional and physically demanding week at Augusta National, where he captured his sixth career major and went back-to-back at the Masters.
The move, while understandable, may frustrate some fans. The RBC Heritage is one of the PGA Tour’s premier stops, featuring a $20 million purse and a stacked field that includes most of the world’s top players.
Still, McIlroy’s absence isn’t entirely surprising.
The 36-year-old has historically skipped Harbour Town, having played the event only a handful of times in his career. And in recent years, he has been more intentional about managing his schedule — prioritizing major championships and long-term performance over a packed weekly slate.
That approach has clearly paid off.
McIlroy’s dominant win at Augusta — achieved after weeks of focused preparation and limited tournament play — reinforces the idea that less can sometimes be more at this stage of his career.
There’s also precedent here. He has skipped this same event before, including after major wins, choosing instead to step away and reset rather than immediately return to competition.
So while some fans may question why one of the sport’s biggest draws isn’t teeing it up at Harbour Town, the reasoning is straightforward: McIlroy just climbed golf’s biggest mountain — again.
And taking a week off after that? It makes plenty of sense.
