The SEC might have the deepest collection of coaches in college football, which makes ranking all 16 far from easy.
But there isn’t much debate at No. 1.
Kirby Smart remains the best coach in the SEC. Georgia is chasing a third consecutive conference championship, Smart already owns two national titles, and the Bulldogs continue to operate at a championship level every season.
Here are my SEC head coach rankings entering 2026:
- Kirby Smart — Georgia
- Steve Sarkisian — Texas
- Kalen DeBoer — Alabama
- Lane Kiffin — LSU
- Brent Venables — Oklahoma
- Mike Elko — Texas A&M
- Josh Heupel — Tennessee
- Pete Golding — Ole Miss
- Eli Drinkwitz — Missouri
- Clark Lea — Vanderbilt
- Alex Golesh — Auburn
- Shane Beamer — South Carolina
- Jeff Lebby — Mississippi State
- Jon Sumrall — Florida
- Will Stein — Kentucky
- Ryan Silverfield — Arkansas
Sarkisian comes in second after turning Texas back into a national contender, but eventually he has to finish the job. All the recruiting success and NFL talent won’t mean as much if Texas can’t turn it into a national championship.
DeBoer gets the slight edge over Kiffin at No. 3 because of his proven success at the highest level, while Kiffin now gets an opportunity to show what he can accomplish with LSU’s resources.
Venables at No. 5 could generate some debate, but Oklahoma has shown enough to believe he’s building something legitimate. Elko and Heupel aren’t far behind.
Golding already comes in at No. 8, while Clark Lea deserves credit at No. 10 for what he’s been able to build at Vanderbilt. Winning there isn’t easy, and the program’s progress under Lea shouldn’t be ignored.
The bottom of the rankings includes several coaches who still have plenty to prove at their current programs.
But everyone is ultimately chasing the same guy.
Until someone consistently takes the SEC away from Georgia, Smart owns the top spot.
