Paul George wasted little time making history with the Boston Celtics, delivering a spectacular performance in his first game with the franchise. Despite Boston suffering a 121-113 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night, George gave Celtics fans plenty of reasons to be excited about what he could bring to the team this season.

The nine-time All-Star scored 38 points, setting a new franchise record for the most points scored by a player in his Celtics debut. He surpassed the previous record of 30 points, set by Kristaps Porzingis in his first game with Boston in 2023.

George Delivers an Incredible Performance

George looked comfortable from the opening minutes, showcasing the scoring ability that has made him one of the NBA’s most talented perimeter players throughout his career.

He finished 12-of-21 from the field, including an impressive 7-of-12 from three-point range. He also converted seven of his eight free-throw attempts while adding five rebounds, three assists and five steals in approximately 31 minutes.

His outside shooting was particularly impressive, as he repeatedly found space beyond the arc and punished Detroit’s defense. George’s ability to score from multiple areas of the floor could become an important part of Boston’s offense as the season progresses.

He also made an impact defensively, recording five steals and demonstrating that he can contribute beyond scoring.

Celtics Still Fall Short Against Detroit

Despite George’s historic performance, Boston could not finish the job against the Pistons. The Celtics built a lead of as many as 22 points before Detroit mounted a second-half comeback.

Detroit took control in the fourth quarter, using a decisive 23-0 run to turn the game around and secure the victory. Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren each scored 22 points to lead the Pistons, while Duncan Robinson added 21.

Jayson Tatum struggled offensively, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-23 shooting, although he recorded 11 assists. Boston will need more consistent production from its supporting cast if it hopes to turn George’s individual success into victories.

A Promising Start for George

Although the result was disappointing, George’s debut offered an encouraging glimpse of his potential fit in Boston. His shooting, versatility and defensive instincts could make him a major weapon alongside Tatum.

The Celtics will look to rebound in their next game against the New York Knicks on Friday. If George can maintain this level of production while the rest of the lineup finds its rhythm, Boston could become a difficult matchup for teams across the league.
