Panthers Set to Be Without Jaelan Phillips Against Buccaneers After Hamstring Injury

The Carolina Panthers are expected to be without one of their most important defensive players this Sunday, as outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips is unlikely to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of a hamstring injury.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales delivered the update Wednesday after Phillips missed the team’s walkthrough. The injury is particularly concerning because the pass rusher aggravated the same hamstring problem during Carolina’s victory over the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday.

Phillips managed to return to that game and finish the contest, but the Panthers are now preparing to move forward without him for their upcoming divisional matchup. With a demanding stretch of the schedule ahead, Carolina will need its defensive front to step up.

Phillips’ Injury Creates a Defensive Challenge

Phillips originally sustained the hamstring injury during Carolina’s Week 4 victory over the Detroit Lions. After receiving additional time to recover during the team’s bye week, he returned against Philadelphia but experienced another setback.

Canales indicated that the team needs to be careful with the injury rather than risk making the situation worse by rushing Phillips back onto the field.

The outside linebacker has been one of Carolina’s most disruptive defenders this season, recording a team-leading 18 quarterback pressures entering the matchup. His ability to generate pressure without requiring extra blitzers has been an important part of the Panthers’ defensive approach.

Losing that production against Tampa Bay could make life more difficult for Carolina’s defense, particularly against a Buccaneers offense capable of taking advantage of additional time in the pocket.

Panthers Need Others to Step Up

With Phillips expected to miss Sunday’s game, Carolina will need contributions from the rest of its outside linebacker group.

Patrick Jones II, Princely Umanmielen and Trevis Gipson could all play important roles in helping replace Phillips’ production. The Panthers could also turn to practice-squad linebacker Nick Hampton for additional depth.

Generating pressure will be especially important against Tampa Bay. If Carolina cannot consistently disrupt the quarterback, the Buccaneers could find opportunities to sustain drives and put points on the board.

Could Phillips Miss More Time?

The Panthers have not announced a firm timetable for Phillips’ return. Canales acknowledged that the team must consider the bigger picture rather than focus exclusively on getting him back for one game.

Carolina also faces a short turnaround before playing Green Bay next Thursday, making his recovery timeline worth monitoring.

For now, the priority is getting Phillips healthy. His absence is a significant setback for the Panthers, but protecting his long-term availability could prove more important than rushing him back too soon.
