The Carolina Panthers have suffered another significant setback on the offensive line, as veteran right tackle Taylor Moton has been placed on injured reserve following a fractured fibula suffered during Sunday’s 43-13 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Carolina announced the move Monday, confirming that Moton will be sidelined for an extended period. The injury is especially frustrating for the veteran lineman, who had only recently returned to the field after missing the first four games of the season.
Moton’s absence leaves the Panthers without one of their most experienced offensive players as they attempt to recover from a difficult start to the season.
Moton Suffers Another Injury Setback
Moton suffered the injury during the third quarter against Tampa Bay when teammate Rasheed Walker accidentally fell across the back of his legs during a blocking play. Moton immediately went down in pain and was eventually carted off the field.
Head coach Dave Canales confirmed that Moton had fractured his fibula and said the team needed further evaluations to determine the full extent of the injury.
The timing is particularly unfortunate because Moton had just returned from a serious health issue involving blood clots in his lungs. He missed Carolina’s first four games while receiving treatment before returning to action against Philadelphia the previous week.
The veteran was appearing in just his second game since coming back, making the latest setback another difficult challenge in what has been a frustrating season.
Panthers Must Adjust Their Offensive Line
Moton’s absence creates a major challenge for Carolina’s offensive line, particularly with quarterback Bryce Young needing consistent protection.
The 32-year-old has been one of the Panthers’ most dependable offensive linemen throughout his career. His experience and ability to protect the quarterback have made him an important part of the team’s offensive structure.
With Moton unavailable, rookie Monroe Freeling is expected to receive another opportunity at right tackle. Freeling started the first four games of the season while Moton was sidelined and replaced him during Sunday’s loss.
Carolina will need its young offensive lineman to step up while the team works through another significant personnel change.
What’s Next for Carolina?
The Panthers also signed outside linebacker Nick Hampton to the active roster to fill Moton’s spot. Hampton had been elevated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.
Moton’s placement on injured reserve means he will miss at least four games, and his recovery could take longer depending on the severity of the fracture.
For Carolina, the priority now is finding stability along the offensive line and keeping Young protected during the upcoming stretch of the schedule.
After overcoming his earlier health problems to return to the field, Moton faces another difficult recovery. The Panthers will hope he can make a full comeback, but his absence leaves a considerable hole in their lineup.
