The gambling scandal hanging over professional basketball just got much bigger.

Former NBA players Malik Beasley and Ed Davis have been indicted as part of a federal investigation into an alleged sports betting scheme, according to court documents unsealed this week. Prosecutors allege the pair were involved in a conspiracy tied to betting on NBA player performance props and manipulating statistical outcomes.

The case is particularly troubling because it strikes at the heart of sports integrity. Federal prosecutors allege Beasley manipulated aspects of his on-court performance during several games in the 2023-24 season while bets were placed on specific statistical categories. Investigators claim the scheme involved multiple individuals, including Davis and an NBA agent.

According to the indictment, Beasley allegedly had significant gambling debts and received financial assistance connected to the operation. Prosecutors claim those debts became part of the arrangement that led to the alleged manipulation of player prop bets.

The story becomes even more significant because it is not an isolated case. The broader federal investigation has already touched multiple basketball figures and continues to expand, raising concerns throughout the NBA about the vulnerability of player prop betting markets.

For the NBA, this is a nightmare scenario.

The league has embraced sports betting partnerships over the past decade, with sportsbooks becoming deeply integrated into broadcasts, arenas, and fan engagement. Cases involving alleged game or stat manipulation threaten the credibility of the product itself. Every unusual rebound total, assist number, or shooting performance suddenly comes under greater scrutiny when accusations like these emerge.

Beasley’s attorney has stated that his client maintains his innocence and is expected to surrender voluntarily while contesting the charges. Like all defendants, Beasley and Davis are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Regardless of the eventual outcome, this case represents one of the biggest gambling scandals the NBA has faced in years. The league’s reputation has long been built on the belief that every game is being competed honestly. Federal prosecutors now allege that trust was compromised.
