Gophers Deliver Dramatic Rivalry Victory

The Minnesota Golden Gophers pulled off a dramatic rivalry victory on Saturday, defeating the No. 15 Iowa Hawkeyes 13-10 at Huntington Bank Stadium. Kicker Luke Drzewiecki delivered the decisive moment, connecting on a 46 yard field goal as time expired to give Minnesota the win and reclaim the Floyd of Rosedale trophy.

The victory improved Minnesota to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in Big Ten play, providing a major boost after a disappointing 41-13 loss to Purdue in its previous game. Head coach P.J. Fleck’s team responded with a gritty defensive performance and made the necessary plays late to defeat its ranked rival.

Defense Sets the Tone

Offense was difficult to come by throughout the afternoon, with both teams struggling to sustain drives. Minnesota opened the scoring with a 31 yard field goal from Drzewiecki in the first quarter, but Iowa answered with a 32 yard kick from Caden Buhr in the second quarter to tie the game at 3-3.

The Gophers finally broke through in the third quarter when running back Darius Taylor scored on a one-yard touchdown run. An Iowa offsides penalty helped keep the drive alive after the Hawkeyes initially appeared to stop Minnesota on fourth down.

Minnesota’s defense played a crucial role, limiting Iowa’s normally productive rushing attack to just 90 yards. The Hawkeyes also committed four turnovers, including three interceptions, repeatedly giving away opportunities to take control of the game.

Iowa Forces a Late Tie

Despite Minnesota’s defensive dominance, Iowa found a way back into the contest during the fourth quarter. Quarterback Hank Brown connected with Reece Vander Zee for a 37 yard touchdown, completing a 98 yard scoring drive that tied the game at 10-10 with fewer than four minutes remaining.

The Hawkeyes appeared to have momentum, but Minnesota answered with a clutch drive of its own. Quarterback Drake Lindsey connected with receiver Jalen Smith for a 39 yard completion on third down, moving the Gophers into position for the winning kick.

Drzewiecki then calmly drilled the 46 yard field goal as the clock expired, sending the Minnesota crowd into celebration.

Minnesota Builds Momentum

The Gophers finished with just 209 total yards but did enough in key moments to secure the victory. The win also marked their first Floyd of Rosedale triumph since 2023.

Minnesota now turns its attention toward another difficult matchup against No. 6 Indiana next weekend. After an emotional rivalry win, Fleck’s team will look to carry its defensive intensity into the next challenge.
