Lane Kiffin gets treated like an elite coach, but his lack of major championships and disappointing start at LSU raise serious questions about his reputation.
At what point are we going to admit that Lane Kiffin might be the most overrated head coach in college football?
For years, Kiffin has been treated like an offensive genius and one of the biggest names in the sport. His personality, social media antics, and flashy offenses have made him a superstar.
But what has he actually accomplished when it matters most?
Kiffin has never won an SEC championship, never coached in an SEC Championship Game, and has never coached a College Football Playoff game.
Yes, he won two Conference USA championships at Florida Atlantic, and he built Ole Miss into a playoff program. But after leading the Rebels to an 11-1 regular season in 2025, Kiffin left for LSU before their playoff run even began.
Ironically, Pete Golding took over and immediately led Ole Miss to playoff victories over Tulane and Georgia.
Now, Kiffin is at LSU, where the expectations are even higher, and the early results have been underwhelming.
The Tigers are sitting at 4-2 following an embarrassing overtime loss to Kentucky. Meanwhile, Brian Kelly had LSU at 5-1 through six games last season.
LSU spent a fortune bringing in Kiffin because the program believed he could deliver championships. Instead, the Tigers are already struggling to stay in the playoff conversation.
Look at coaches like Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, and Curt Cignetti. They’ve delivered when the stakes were highest. Kiffin continues receiving similar hype without the same championship résumé.
Nobody is denying that Kiffin can recruit talent, develop explosive offenses, or win regular-season games.
But being a good offensive mind and being a championship-winning head coach are two completely different things.
Until Kiffin proves he can win on the biggest stage, why should anyone consider him among college football’s elite?
Maybe the problem was never Ole Miss. Maybe it isn’t LSU, either.
Maybe Lane Kiffin just isn’t the championship-caliber head coach everyone thinks he is.
