The Minnesota Vikings are getting their starting quarterback back.
Kyler Murray has cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol and is set to return to the starting lineup Sunday when the Vikings travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers. Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed Monday that Murray has completed the final phase of the protocol and is ready to play.
Murray suffered the concussion during Minnesota’s Week 1 victory over the Green Bay Packers. He took a hard hit while attempting to slide on a scramble and was forced to leave the game early. Murray completed 3 of 5 passes for 18 yards and an interception before exiting.
The Vikings turned to Carson Wentz after Murray’s injury, and the veteran quarterback helped Minnesota remain undefeated. Wentz led the comeback victory over Green Bay before starting again in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears.
Minnesota defeated Chicago 9-3 on Sunday, improving to 2-0 on the season. Wentz completed 11 of 20 passes for 143 yards in the victory while helping the Vikings’ defense control the game.
Now, Murray will take back the offense as Minnesota prepares for Tampa Bay.
The return gives the Vikings their original plan at quarterback after Murray’s first game with the team was cut short. O’Connell also emphasized that Murray had the opportunity to watch Wentz operate the offense and could take lessons from the veteran’s emphasis on protecting the football and making smart decisions.
Murray’s return comes at an important time for Minnesota. The Vikings are undefeated through two weeks and will now look to continue that start with their new starting quarterback back under center.
After a frightening start to his Minnesota career, Murray finally gets the opportunity to make his return and show Vikings fans what he can do.
