The New York Knicks finally got their season moving in the right direction Tuesday night, defeating the Detroit Pistons 111-97 to secure their first victory of the 2026-27 NBA season. Behind a dominant performance from Karl Anthony Towns and a strong third quarter, New York avoided falling to 0-4 after a disappointing opening stretch.
Towns led the way with 27 points and 20 rebounds, delivering the type of performance the Knicks needed to get back on track. Jalen Brunson added 23 points and seven assists, while Mikal Bridges finished with 12 points as New York found its offensive rhythm at the right time.
Knicks Take Control After Slow Start
The game did not begin smoothly for New York. Detroit came out firing, scoring 38 points in the opening quarter and building a 13-point advantage. The Knicks struggled to find consistency early, raising concerns that their difficult start might continue.
However, New York responded in the second quarter, tightening its defense and gradually working its way back into the contest. The Knicks entered halftime with a narrow 51-50 lead after outscoring Detroit 26-12 in the second quarter.
The third quarter proved decisive. New York exploded for 37 points while holding Detroit to just 13, turning a competitive matchup into a commanding lead. Brunson found his rhythm, Bridges knocked down perimeter shots, and Towns controlled the paint.
Detroit made a late push in the fourth quarter, outscoring New York 34-23, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.
A Much Needed Win for New York
The victory was particularly important for the defending champions, who entered the matchup 0-3 after losses to Philadelphia, Boston and Orlando. Another defeat would have placed even more pressure on a team expected to contend for another championship.
For Detroit, Cade Cunningham finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, while Paul Reed contributed 22 points and nine rebounds.
The Knicks will look to build on this performance when they visit the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. Tuesday’s victory does not erase their early struggles, but it gives New York a foundation to build on as the season continues.
