“I don’t want somebody else’s investment. I want mine.”
The quote perfectly captures how Smart has built Georgia into one of college football’s premier programs. While many schools aggressively attack the transfer portal every offseason, the Bulldogs continue to prioritize recruiting elite high school talent and developing players within their own program.
That doesn’t mean Georgia ignores the portal entirely, but Smart has consistently treated it as a tool rather than the foundation of roster building. His belief is that players developed in Athens better understand the culture, expectations, and standards that have produced multiple national championships.
In an era where roster turnover has become the norm, Georgia remains one of the few powerhouse programs committed to long-term development. The strategy has paid off so far, and if the Bulldogs are back in the national title conversation this season, Smart’s philosophy will once again have plenty of supporters.
