For the first time in a while, Kentucky football has given its fans a reason to believe that something special could be developing in Lexington.
The Wildcats walked into College Station as an unranked team facing No. 9 Texas A&M. They walked out with one of the biggest wins of the young college football season.
Kentucky stunned the Aggies 31-21, earning its first victory over Texas A&M since 1952 and handing the Aggies their first regular season home loss since 2024. The victory also gave Kentucky a 2-1 record and a 1-1 mark in SEC play.
Now, the Wildcats are receiving votes in the AP Top 25 and have suddenly put themselves back into the national conversation.
Kenny Minchey Is Becoming the Leader
A major reason for Kentucky’s turnaround is quarterback Kenny Minchey.
The transfer from Notre Dame delivered one of the best performances of his young Kentucky career against the Aggies. Minchey completed 14 of 18 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, including a huge second half touchdown pass to Kenny Darby that helped swing the game in Kentucky’s favor.
Minchey was especially impressive after halftime.
The game was tied 7-7 at the break, but Kentucky came out firing. Minchey connected with Darby for a 42-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, giving the Wildcats the lead.
From there, Kentucky’s offense continued to attack.
Running back CJ Baxter added two touchdown runs, and Kentucky turned a close game into a 28-7 advantage during a dominant third quarter.
Minchey also showed impressive efficiency. He completed his first nine passes of the second half for 142 yards, helping Kentucky control the game when it mattered most.
Will Stein Is Making an Immediate Impact
This win was also a major moment for first year head coach Will Stein.
Stein entered the season taking over a Kentucky program with plenty of questions, but his first SEC road victory came against a top 10 opponent.
That is a pretty strong introduction.
The victory over Texas A&M was Stein’s first road win, first SEC win, first SEC road win and first victory over a ranked opponent as Kentucky’s head coach. He also became the first Kentucky head coach to win a true road game against an AP Top 10 opponent.
The timing made the win even more impressive.
Kentucky had just suffered a disappointing loss to Alabama after leading the Crimson Tide 17-13 at halftime. Against Texas A&M, the Wildcats faced another major challenge and responded completely differently.
After falling behind 7-0, Kentucky settled down and eventually scored 28 unanswered points, taking control of the game.
That response could be one of the most important developments of the season.
Kentucky Is Getting National Attention Again
The Wildcats aren’t ranked yet, but they are getting close.
Kentucky received the second most votes among teams outside the AP Top 25 following the Texas A&M upset. Meanwhile, Texas A&M dropped from No. 9 all the way to No. 23 after the loss.
That puts Kentucky in an interesting position.
The Wildcats have already proven they can go on the road and beat a top 10 SEC opponent. Now they have an opportunity to build on that momentum.
Kentucky returns home next week to face South Alabama before the SEC schedule continues.
The Wildcats still have plenty to prove, but the Texas A&M win has changed the conversation around the program.
With Minchey leading the offense, Baxter providing a strong running game and Stein establishing his identity as a head coach, Kentucky suddenly looks like a team nobody in the SEC can afford to overlook.
