The Kansas Jayhawks opened the 2026 season with an emphatic statement.
Kansas overwhelmed LIU 51-6 Friday night at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, using a dominant defensive performance and an explosive second half to turn the season opener into a rout.
Kansas Finds Its Rhythm
The Jayhawks didn’t immediately explode offensively, scoring just six points during the first quarter.
But once Kansas settled in, the points came quickly.
Kansas scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and entered halftime with a commanding 23-0 lead. Yasin Willis scored twice on the ground, while Jalen Dupree added another rushing touchdown.
From there, the game was never seriously in doubt.
Isaiah Marshall Impresses
Quarterback Isaiah Marshall made a strong first impression in his first start for Kansas.
Marshall completed 14 of 19 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Nik McMillan and Tate Nagy for scores. He also added 49 rushing yards on seven carries before leaving the game in the second half.
With Marshall winning the starting job over Cole Ballard during the offseason, his performance gives Kansas plenty of reason to be optimistic about the offense.
The Defense Sets the Tone
While the offense eventually caught fire, Kansas’ defense was the story early.
The Jayhawks forced LIU into a three-and-out on its opening possession and consistently prevented the Sharks from establishing any rhythm. LIU ultimately managed only six points in the entire game.
Kansas continued to make plays throughout the night, turning what initially looked like a slow offensive start into a comfortable blowout.
Kansas Turns Its Attention to Missouri
The victory gives Lance Leipold’s team a 1-0 start and keeps Kansas undefeated in season openers under Leipold.
But the real challenge comes next.
Kansas now turns its attention toward a massive rivalry matchup against Missouri in the Border War. The Jayhawks will enter that game with confidence after dominating LIU and showing plenty of potential on both sides of the football.
Kansas may have started slowly, but the Jayhawks finished with a statement. A 51-6 victory has Kansas rolling into the Border War with plenty of momentum.
