ATLANTA — Florida head coach Jon Sumrall made it clear Wednesday that he isn’t interested in complaining about what comes with leading an SEC football program.
When asked about the possibility of the conference moving to a nine-game league schedule, Sumrall quickly shut down the idea that coaches should gripe about a more difficult path.
“I’m not going to whine and complain about being an SEC head football coach.”
The comment drew attention because it came as the SEC continues debating whether to expand from its current eight-game conference schedule. While some coaches have expressed concerns about adding another league game, Sumrall’s response reflected a simple philosophy: if you choose to coach in the nation’s premier football conference, you accept everything that comes with it.
That mentality carried over into another memorable quote later in his press conference.
“I grew up thinking there were three leagues… the AFC, the NFC and the SEC.”
The line drew laughs from the room, but it also captured the reverence many coaches and fans have for the conference’s place in college football. For decades, the SEC has built its reputation on elite recruiting, passionate fan bases, packed stadiums and a national championship pedigree.
For Sumrall, who arrived at Florida after leading Tulane, coaching in the SEC isn’t something to complain about—it’s an opportunity he embraces.
The comments continued a headline-filled day for the first-year Gators coach. Earlier in Media Days, Sumrall made news by distancing his move from Tulane to Florida from Lane Kiffin’s departure from Ole Miss to LSU, emphasizing the importance of finishing the season with the team he was coaching.
Now, he’s making another thing clear: if the SEC decides to make its road even tougher with a nine-game schedule, don’t expect Florida’s head coach to be one of the voices asking for an easier path.
